In 1978, the three Lutheran churches in Simi Valley had a dream, a dream to sponsor a Christian school in Simi Valley. Many people came together to make this dream happen.Since the three Lutheran churches had already sponsored a Vietnamese family together, the history was there to cooperate on projects together. This sponsorship paved the way for building a relationship through a school. At that time, the three major national Lutheran church bodies, LCMS, ALC, and LCA, were still in fellowship together. Some of the fellow Lutherans in town had a deep commitment to work together in Christian fellowship. Pastor Al Young accepted a call to Trinity, Simi, arriving in July 1978. By September 1978, Trinity’s Church Council had approved the planning of a Lutheran school. The resolution specifically invited Our Saviour and Our Redeemer to join as equal partners. Both churches agreed immediately. Each congregation provided three representatives and their pastor as a steering committee. Pastors Dave Wilkerson of Our Saviour, John Schaumburg of Our Redeemer, and Al Young of Trinity were the pastors at the time. Also on that original steering committee was JoAn Larson, a member at Our Saviour who later taught at the school.. The steering committee met each month. They did research, looked at needs and demographics, and sought resources and consultants. Planning went smoothly. The committee made a decision of faith to open the school with grades K, 1, and 2 in September 1979, just one year after the first resolution to start a school. Grades 1 and 2 met at Trinity taught by Nancy Young, who also served as principal. Kindergarten met at Our Redeemer taught by Nancy Hawthorne. Thirty students made up the student body that first year.
Starting in 1979, the school added a grade a year until reaching the eighth grade. One memorable year, Good Shepherd even sponsored a ninth grade. Thanks to the vision of people committed to Lutheran education as well as thirty families who had the courage to enroll their children in a fledging school with makeshift classrooms, Good Shepherd has grown into a quality Lutheran school that has provided a Christ-centered education for the children of God for the past 28 years.
God has blessed Good Shepherd Lutheran School in so many ways. A growing number of alumni return to give thanks for the Christian education they received. All of God’s people find a Christian family centered in God’s love in Christ at Good Shepherd Lutheran School. |
